I’m a sucker for rock movies -> I like movies and I like music => I like movies with good music in them.
Here is my top 5 movies that have something to do with rock, more or less, that I really dig.
You can probably tell by the first two that I’m a Jack Black fan. The School of Rock is nr. 1 on my list because of the energy Jack shows thought the whole movie.
So here is one of Jack’s songs

If you walk down the street and some stranger comes to you with a grin on his faces and asks you what’s that you are listening to (obviously some sort of an mp3 player), what do you do? The wheals in my paranoid head start turning.
What’s with that grin? Is this person really asking about an mp3 player? Is he some kind of schmuck who wants to play some stupid joke?
Questions, questions…
In situation like this, I and am sure that some of you too, snap and the guy/gal. I do that because of the status quo. If someone plays a tasteless joke on you once you don’t want to go thought that again. 1) Who asks what and mp3 players is nowadays? 2) Who asks what you are listening to? 3) Who wants to ask a serious question with a grin from on ear to the other
Nobody, the status quo is that you usually don’t stop people on the street and ask questions that are personal or plain stupid from the realm of “is the grass growing”, and if you do ask a question you probably do your best not to look like an arrogant shop lifter.
There are plenty of reasons for that, many are good, some are bad. We have to manage not to kill each other in an overpopulated area like a big city and these small rules, the status quo, help. But what if the rule is broken? What if the status quo works against us, as a group or as individuals? What if the guy who asked me about the player was genuinely interested in something? And I snapped!
If the status quo is truly broken it will adjust in time, slowly, evolving with the culture of the city/country/world itself. But until that happens it’s worth thinking before acting and not blindly applying the rule.
Lesson learned – Think before you act! Status quo is not funny, it’s there to make things barely work and give patterns. Patterns don’t always work. Think!
Note 1: Yes, some guy did ask me about what was I listening to, or something related to my player and yes, I snapped at him. This is just some guy who I sometimes see when walking to work and he is waiting with his not so intelligent coworkers / friends to start his work day. Note 2: In retrospective I’m not sorry I snapped, because I’m convinced in this particular case he wanted to show his smartassery to his friends. Note 3: When walking today to work, he minded his own business. Note 4: People should really think before they open their mouth.
